بدل ما ياخد متوسط البيكسلات المجاورة بس، الـ NL-means بيدوّر في نافذة على رقع (patches) متشابهة في أي حتة قريبة وياخد متوسطها. كده الأنسجة المتكررة بتفضل موجودة، بينما التشويش العشوائي بتاع الحساس بيتلغي.
قوة الإضاءة بتستهدف حبيبات السطوع؛ وقوة اللون بتستهدف بقع اللون (البقع الحمرا/الخضرا اللي بتظهر عادةً في التصوير بـ ISO عالي). تشويش اللون عادةً بيتحمّل فلترة أقوى من غير ما تبان خسارة في التفاصيل.
شوية نعومة بتحصل بشكل طبيعي عند القوة العالية. ابدأ عند حوالي 10/10، وبصّ على التفاصيل الدقيقة زي الشعر أو القماش، وزوّد قوة اللون بس الأول — تنظيف اللون تقريبًا مبيأثرش على الحدّة المحسوسة.
