Convert JPG to Grayscale Online — B&W Converter

Convert a color JPG to grayscale using perceptual, average, lightness, value, individual-channel, custom mixer, or decolor methods. Compare how each formula handles tones, then process and download the selected result.

How to Use Grayscale JPG

  1. Select a JPG — Choose the color JPG that you want to convert.
  2. Choose a grayscale method — Compare a luminance preset, a channel method, or the custom mixer controls.
  3. Process and download — Generate the grayscale result and save it as a separate image.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between grayscale and black and white?
Grayscale preserves 256 shades from black to white, retaining tonal detail. Pure black and white (1-bit) only has two values. Pixlane defaults to grayscale; for 1-bit output use the threshold tool.
Why are there multiple grayscale algorithms?
Different formulas weight the red, green, and blue channels differently. BT.601 and BT.709 are luminance standards, while average, lightness, channel, and mixer modes produce different tonal emphasis.
Can I convert grayscale back to color?
The original colors cannot be recovered from grayscale pixels alone. A colorization tool can estimate new colors, but that is a separate generated result rather than a restoration of the exact source colors.
